Ivan Nikulcha

IVAN NIKULCHA

Was born on January 12, 1982 in Berdichev (Ukraine). In 2004 he graduated from Kiev National Institute of Arts (faculty of directing) and became an actor in Roman Viktyuk's Theater.

Some of his roles are:
Monsieur ("The Maids")
Jokanaan, Robert Ross, Podgers ("Salome")
Azazello ("Master and Margarita")
Chevalier de Shifrevil ("Don Juan's last love")

As an actor he beleives that theater is a job which defines the way of life and thinking. And it is an invaluable experience for him as a photogrpaher. As an art-photographer he presents us ordinary things, situations and people from different point of view.

A photograph for him is not just a still picture. It is a captured moment of someone`s carefully made video called "Life". His works resemble a diary where surrealism intertwines with reality.

His first one-man's show called "Going. Travel notes" took place in Kiev . Then it was also showed in Saint-Petersburg, Moscow , Rostov-on-Don, Yekaterinburg. Works of the series "Suitcases", other photos taken in different countries and cities during theater tours were presented on the exhibitions.

Also there had been presented a series of self-portraits where the loneliness was the main theme.

His works are mostly black-and-white. It emphasizes the distance between heroes and spectators and makes heroes the part of the nature. The colour appears only in a few photos. That emphasizes certain details of the exposure but doesn`t make a hero closer to us.

Ivan Nikulcha as a photographer not only conserves rare beautiful moments but also as a philosopher he tries to show us his view of life: an artist is always on the road, always alone and always a child. Road, trains, buses, hotels... It seems that there will be no stop any more...
